What star power is, how your balance works, what spends it, and what to do when you run out.

Star power is the credit every AI action spends — continuing your text, rewriting, web search, generating an image. This page explains how your balance works, what uses it, and how to avoid running dry in the middle of a piece.
How your balance works
Your balance has a monthly allowance and extra star power. The monthly allowance refreshes with your plan's cycle. Extra credit can come from a first paid-plan bonus or another grant; it does not refill with the monthly allowance and may have its own expiry date.
Check the star power page for both balances and their reset or expiry dates. Muses charges available credit automatically; you do not need to switch between balances. See Plans & Pricing for the bonus rules.
Model choices and usage
The AI chat offers Default and Prime: Free uses Default, while paid plans also include Prime. These are the product's model choices, not a list of every underlying model.
Usage depends on the request, context length, and tools used. Default suits everyday writing; choose Prime for more demanding work when your plan supports it. Long context and image generation can also affect usage. Check your star power history for actual charges.

Your allowance resets each month on your billing date — not on the 1st.
Where to check your balance
- The star power indicator in the app shows what's left at a glance.
- Your star power page (in your profile) shows your remaining balance, how much you've used this month, when it next resets, and a history of what spent it.
When you run out
If your balance reaches zero, AI actions pause and you'll see a message that you're out of star power. Your writing and everything you've saved are untouched — only the AI is paused. To keep going you can:
- Wait for your monthly reset (the date is on your star power page), or
- Upgrade your plan for a larger monthly allowance.
How not to get caught short
- Keep routine work on the Default model and choose Prime when your plan supports it and the task needs it.
- Glance at the star power indicator during long sessions.
- If you regularly hit zero before your reset, your plan is probably a size too small — compare plans.
